Things Promised

All these people were still living by faith when they died.
They did not receive the things promised;  Hebrews 11:13

I'm a very impatient person and I don't like surprises, so waiting for a promise to be fulfilled is a hard thing for me.  If I'm promised something, I want it now and I certainly don't want to have to suffer in order to see that promise fulfilled.

I just finished reading Hebrews 11.  The men and women listed in this chapter displayed great faith in God, but not all of them were rewarded for their faith here on earth.

Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land.  He went without knowing where he was going and he lived in tents when he got there because he was looking forward to a better place; a new home in heaven.

Moses chose to share the oppression of God's people rather than enjoy the treasures of Egypt because he was looking ahead to his great reward.

When Joseph was about to die, he said confidently that the people of Israel would leave Egypt.  He even gave them instructions to take his bones with them.  He was looking forward.

Jesus was looking forward when, "for the joy set before him he endured the cross."   He was looking to that day when He would again sit down at the right hand of God.

Many times we get frustrated because our needs, wants, and expectations are not immediately met.  We get discouraged because the promise seems so far off, but we can take courage from these heroes of faith.  They lived and died without seeing the fruit of their faith here on earth, yet they still believed.  And now they are cheering us on.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses... let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Hebrews 12:1

Are you looking forward to things promised?

  6. I absolutely love your post. Patience has not been my most virtuous place. Over at my place I wrote about what awaits us on the other side of commitment, obedience, sacrifice, perseverance, and follow through. I am so glad I stopped by.
