Tough Love

Yesterday morning at church I had a conversation with a sweet sister.  We each have sons who are in their early 20's and still living at home.  My friend and I both love our boys so much, but we admitted that it might be time to start practicing some tough love.

As parents, we discipline our children because we love them and we want to protect them. Our goal should be to raise healthy, well-rounded adults, not just well-behaved children.  If we give in to their every demand or reward them for their disobedience, we are only enabling their bad behavior.  Discipline brings correction.

So it is with our Heavenly Father.  He loves us so much!  And because He loves, He disciplines.  God has so many blessings that He wants to bestow upon us, but some of those blessings are dependent upon our obedience.  We can't continue to disobey God's commands and expect Him to reward our behavior- God loves us too much for that.

Are you submitting to the loving discipline of your Heavenly Father?

Continuing to count my many Blessings:

546.  A long walk/talk with my husband yesterday afternoon

  6. Lisa,

Sometimes it is so hard to accept God's discipline as love, but it is so true. He knows what He wants to give us and who we will need to be to receive those blessings and glorify God with them.

    Blessings to you Lisa.

  8. Tough love really is what is best for our children. I have to admit though that it isn't just hard for the one receiving it; tough love is also hard for the one who must exercise it. Thankfully, it is worth it in the end.
    Blessings!

  9. Hi Lisa - its really tough when we experience God's tough love but always so worth it. I read today in 1 Chron about how David chose God's discipline because he knew God would be gracious with him. We need to believe in our Father's grace and mercy and how His tough love is the best way for us.
    God bless
    Tracy
