No Comparisons

Each one should test his own actions.
Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else.
Galatians 6:4  NIV

The title of this post is "No Comparisons," but I'm going to contradict myself for a minute to say that I love comparing Scriptures in different translations and versions.  If I'm not sure what a verse is saying I will read it from another translation for a different perspective. Look at the above verse in these different versions:
Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don't be impressed with yourself. Don't compare yourself with others.  Galatians 6:4 MSG
Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won't need to compare yourself to anyone else.  Galatians 6:4 NLT

Pay care attention to your own work; make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given...

These words really speak to me this morning.  We need to pay attention to the work God has called us to do and not compare ourselves to others.  I'm only responsible for the work God has called me to do. ("For we are each responsible for our own conduct." - vs 5)  But how many times do we try to compare?  Sometimes we compare the physical or material, i.e. Do they make more money; Is she prettier; Who has better clothes, newer car, better house, etc.  But other times we compare things which should be more spiritual.
  • Is our worship team better than theirs?
    • Do we please God with our worship?
  • Do I sing as well as that person?
    • Do I sing for God?
  • Am I as powerful a teacher/preacher as they are?
    • Are you teaching/preaching what God laid on your heart?
  • Do I have as many readers or followers on my blog or Facebook page as they do?
    • Are you writing for God or man?
Everything I am is because of the Grace of God. And everything I do should be for His Glory.   There is no good in me - but there is God in me.   I want to boast in that alone.
For my part, I am going to boast about nothing but the Cross of our Master, Jesus Christ. Because of that Cross, I have been crucified in relation to the world, set free from the stifling atmosphere of pleasing others and fitting into the little patterns that they dictate.  Galatians 6:14,15 MSG

Many blessings,

  1. Good words! It's always been a struggle for me to refrain from comparing myself to others, but all it does is create an entrance for doubt, fear, and a host of other anxieties. God is really working on me in this area!

  2. It is so easy to compare ourselves whether material or the more spiritual matters. But God created us and loves us the way we are. And it is by His grace we are even here. Great encouragement.

  3. It is so easy to fall into comparing - families, homeschool, church, spiritual life, blogging. Definitely a struggle for me! Thank you for that great verse, reminding me to focus on what GOD HAS REQUIRED of me! Visiting from Thought Provoking Thursday.

  4. This one gave me tears today. Great words. I've compared myself to alot of people (and I don't come out on top), but I do try to do what God wants of me, and there is no comparison with him.

  5. wow, you have said it here. I think us women get so caught up in this. I know I have really been thru a tough time last year going thru this exact thing. Comparing and never coming out seeming to be enough for God or anyone else for that matter and it was a struggle. I realized this is how Satan puts us into bondage so that we can't be all that we can be because for me it paralyzed me. So, to heck with him and focus on HIM and only HIM!

  6. Great post Lisa, and a wonderful insight into these verses.

When we place our focus on "one upping" one another instead of leading our lives for the glory of God, we're destined to remain unsatisfied, and chained to the world's imperfections.

    Have a Blessed Day!

  7. sometimes i get caught up in the comparing game but God makes us all unique, all individual. It would be boring if we were all alike. Great post!

  8. Love your post! Great read this morning and I, like you, enjoy comparing different translation of the bible when I need more clarification. Doing so, takes you deeper into the Word. Blessings!
