God. . . Plus Me?

I'm a pretty independent woman.  I take pride in being able to do things "all by myself" ~ unless it's something I don't want to do, then I pretend I can't do it and ask for help. (smiles)   Sometimes I just need some help to get started, and then I'm able to finish the task by myself.

Have you ever experienced that?  Maybe you're looking for a job - a friend can help you get your foot in the door, then it's up to you to impress the employer with your skills and work experience. Or perhaps you want to be involved in a ministry at church and you need someone to just help you get started.

A sense of independence is a good thing, but I wonder if sometimes I let that independent spirit translate to my walk with God. Do I live like I think I just needed the Holy Spirit to "get me in the door" with God, but now it's up to be to do the rest?
How foolish can you be? After starting your Christian lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?  Galatians 3:3 NLT
Being good, working in my own strength and obeying all the rules doesn't make me righteous.
But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, "Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God's Book of the Law."  Galatians 3:10
I can't keep all the law; I'm human and I mess up.  I'm cursed because of my failure to keep the law.  That's why God sent His Son.
But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing.  Galatians 3:13
I need the Holy Spirit just as much today (if not more) as I did when I first believed.  It's never about human strength, but always about God's grace.  It's not God plus me - it's just God.

Many blessings,

  1. That last paragraph is so powerful, Lisa. And so true!

  2. Independence can be good, but we must learn to be dependent on God. It should always be God plus me. Great encouragement!

  3. Lisa,

Oh my gosh I do that and never realized it!

I think God is there to open the door and then He leaves the rest up to me. It is not me and God it is just God.

Thank you for putting that in perspective, I just had a total light bulb moment.

    Blessings to you Lisa.

  4. I'm fifty years old and have a head full of gray hair, and yet I'm still ever-so-slowly learning, "Apart from me you can do nothing." Nothing. Great post!

  5. Wonderful post Lisa, and so very true. Keeping ourselves closely connected to God isn't just important early on in our Walk, but all throughout our journey to His side.

    Have a Blessed Day!

  6. Hi Lisa - I also tend to be independent and I think its a stumbling block sometimes to trusting and letting go and letting God! Great post, it is God, and God alone. He so does not need my help, i need His
    God bless

  7. Ah yes, the age old where is the line between grace and works. What is my part and His? We do what we can in faith, and He prospers it because he surrounds us with favor as with a shield!

  8. That last line? I am posting this on my fridge! He may give me the calling but it doesn't mean I AM THE REASON the calling exists. (smile) I love this!

  9. I certainly can identify with this post. For so long I knew being independent was a strength and one I leaned on heavily. "I can do it myself" mentality. Now I am finding it such an obstacle in my spiritual walk and trying to surrender all to God. Good thoughts here today!

  10. This was so good (as you can tell I'm a little behind in commenting lol) So good and so timely although I didn't know how timely it was until now huh ;) God does NOT need our help. It's not God plus me, it's just God. LOVE that.
