First Thoughts

Ok, I'm going to say a word and you say the first thing that comes to mind.  I'll play too, and to make it more fun, my husband will give us the words.  Ready . . . Go!
World . . . globe
Coat . . . gloves
Drums . . . loud
Batman . . . Robin
Backpack . . . school
Shoe . . . foot
Milk . . . cat (I don't know where that came from.  Just go with it.)
Morning . . . Facebook, email, blog

What is the first thing on your mind when you wake up in the morning?  I'm embarrassed to admit that my first thoughts have not been very godly.

Every morning I get my cup of coffee and my Bible and spend time with God.  But before I do that, I wake up, grab my phone and check my email.  You see, my first thoughts each morning are not about God, but my email, Facebook and blog.  Who sent me an email over night, what's happening on Facebook, and did my blog post at the scheduled time, are the things on my mind.

This carries over to other parts of my life too.  When I'm faced with the unknown, my first thought is to worry about the worst-case scenario.  When someone has hurt me or not acted the way I think they should, my first thought is to criticize or complain.

What would change in my life if my first thoughts were of God?  Instead of wondering who sent an email, I awoke with wonder of what God was going to do that day.  Rather than worry or complaining, my first thought was to pray.  What if my first thought of the day was Good Morning God, I want to see You today, and my last thought of the day was, Thank you Jesus for your blessings.   Do you think my first thoughts would have any impact on the rest of my thoughts?  I do. That's why I've been praying that God would give me new thoughts.

Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.
Ephesians 4:23

What are your first thoughts?

Many blessings,

  1. I, too, am guilty of thinking of the things of this world first in the morning, Lisa. Thanks for the wake up call.
    Blessings!

  2. Ouch.

I would love to say my quiet time is my first thing in the morning. Most mornings it is, but not always. I do tend to grab my cell and see what texts or emails I got overnight and make sure my blog posted before I do anything else. I have gotten good about not turning on the computer until after I spend time with God, but maybe I need to work on the cell phone now...

  4. Even today I turned to my cell phone before my Bible, I want God to be the FIRST One I turn to in the morning and the last One I turn to at night He's more important than my cell phone anyway! great post!

  5. Guilty as charged :( I reach for my phone, check my email... get rid of the trash and handle anything else that needs attention. I'm reminded of Matt. 6:33... "Seek first HIS kingdom" ...not mine! Thanks Lisa, great encouragement!

  6. I can raise my hand in the guilty column as well some days, in fact it sometimes gets so bad I will turn on my computer and let it warm up before I get my coffee, After all I pass my computer on my way to my kitchen. Then I read the blogs I follow and Email. But the blogs are spiritual that counts right?
Not exactly. I need to spend time in God's word and hear what he says to me. . But I am getting better, Before I get yup I do pray and talk with God about my day and ask that He guide me throughout my day.

  7. Wow - totally stepped on my toes! I have a morning routine also, and sadly, God is in the number 1 spot. Thanks for this challenging, inspiring post. I want to strive to make Him top priority at ALL times!

  9. I hate to admit that the blogging life can lead to this type of error in thinking. It can start to feel like a validation contest. Who will validate me today? When the Father is there with His Word, gently nudging and saying, you will only find out who you are here, with Me.

  10. I admit the first thing I do in the morning get a cup of coffee and then check my e-mail. I do say good morning to God before I get out of bed, does that count?

    Blessings Lisa.

  11. Ouch... convicted here as well Lisa.

When the alarm sounds in the morning, the first thing I do while still lying in bed is to grab my phone and check email, my blog and facebook. Sounds like I need to be focusing on some new thoughts as well.

    Thank you for the reminder!

    Have a Blessed Day!

  12. Add me to the line of those who feel convicted! Lately, it seems time with the Lord gets pushed further and further back to where I'm trying to read my Bible before going to bed. It's never really that fruitful for me because I'm trying to stay awake!

Great reminder for me to remember to keep the "Main Thing, the main thing" as my old pastor used to say!
