Follower or Just a Fan

My husband started a new teaching series at church yesterday on what it means to be a follower of Jesus.  A lot of people who think they are a follower are really just a fan.

Fan:  an enthusiastic admirer

A fan wants all the benefits of a relationship with Jesus, without any sacrifice.  The crowds of people that Jesus fed, healed and taught were mainly just fans.   Most of them followed Him because they wanted something from Him.  They praised Him as long as it was easy, but ran away when the going got tough.

Being a follower of Jesus isn't easy.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me.  Matthew 16:24

I want to be a follower of Jesus, but I know there are days when I live as just a fan.

Are you a follower or just a fan?

  1. Our pastor started this series a couple of weeks ago. I was intrigued from the start and am now reading Idleman's book "not a fan." I realize I have been a fan for most of my life; I'm working on a relationship that will define me as a follower. :)

  2. I'm giggling to myself as when I read fan I thought the one for cooling us down rather than the person. I guess both fans have the same thing in common - both are good with hot air! Good challenge - being a fan is some much more comfortable than being a follower.

  3. Hi Lisa
I have just started the book. Sometimes I am just a fan but am working on being a follower at all times and at any cost. Blessings to you...Chelle

  5. I think there are some days when I'm a fan and some days when I'm a follower. I want to be a follower every single moment no matter what comes my way and God and I are working on that. Great post!

  11. Hi Lisa - excellent post. I never really thought about it but the way you have put it makes me think I need to evaluate which one I am, if I need to, obviously I lean towards 'fan' more! Great motivation to 'follow' rather than 'blow hot air' as Tracey said.
    God bless
    Tracy

  14. What a great post! Therein lies the rub of our daily walk...follower or fan. This daily struggle is what makes life rich and full.
I'm your newest follower and fan! :)

  16. Love your list Lisa and this post! I SO want to be a follower all of the time, but oh, it's so easy to be just a fan... once again I'm reminded of how intentional we need to be as followers of Christ! Thanks for this! Blessings!

  17. Wonderful post Lisa, and it sounds like a great study as well. I think even the most devout Christians go through times of simply being a "Fan", however recognizing the need for a closer Walk and striving to tighten that relationship moves us ever closer to remaining a Follower.

    Have a Blessed Day!

  19. Oh wow, Lisa -- what a subtle but important distinction. I've really never thought about that -- but you have opened a whole new thought to ponder tonight. I suspect I am mostly a fan, if I am truly honest with myself.
