The Past is the Key

We're done with school!  One more reason why I love home schooling.  Yesterday was our last day and now we are officially on summer break.  Before I forget everything we've studied,  I want to share about the principle of uniformity.  Darwin used this idea to formulate the theory of evolution.  The principle of uniformity is the idea that the present is the key to the past.  That means we can only explain what happened in the past based on what we observe in the present.  As Christians, we believe just the opposite, the past is the key to the present.  I was thinking about this as I read this passage from Psalms.

Has the Lord rejected me forever?
Will he never again be kind to me?
Is his unfailing love gone forever?
Have his promises permanently failed?
Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has he slammed the door on his compassion?

And I said, “This is my fate;
the Most High has turned his hand against me.”
Psalm 77:7-10

Have you ever felt this way?

If we believe the principle of uniformity, we would reason that it has always been this way, it's never going to change, and there's no reason for hope.   God has always rejected, always disappointed.  But that is not the case.  When we are feeling isolated and forgotten, we just need to look to the past.

But then I recall all you have done, O Lord;
I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago.
They are constantly in my thoughts.
I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.
O God, your ways are holy.
Is there any god as mighty as you?
You are the God of great wonders!
Psalm 77:11-14

Things may seem dark at the present time, but we can look back and see the nature of God.  We recall all the ways and times that God has provided in the past.  Then we can begin to praise Him.  Not because our present circumstances have changed, but because we know that God hasn't changed.

So look to the past for the key to your future.  The same God who parted the Red Sea and rained manna from Heaven will provide for you.  God is faithful!

Many blessings,

  3. This post spoke directly to me today. Yes I have often felt rejected or forgotten about, thinking this is never going to end, and when I look back on all the ways God has taken care of me I know I have nothing to worry about, but then I start thinking, is this going to be the time? I have to remember to keep my eyes on Him, and remember all that He done for me in the past and rest in that security.

    Blessings to you Lisa.

  4. I love looking at the faithfulness of God in the Old Testament and realizing that is the same God I serve today! So encouraging!

  5. We always say to ourselves 'forget the past and strive for the present' but you are right God is the past and we must never forget it. It is our past mistakes we should never look back on but we always need to look at the past and remember what God has done for us. He never and will never let us down. A really great post, thank you and blessings to you.

  6. Nice post. It is so important to reminnd ourselves of God's faithfulness. This post reminded me of one of my favorite verses in Hebrews 10:13 "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess because He who promised is faithful"
