It Takes Time

I've mentioned before that I am learning to play the keyboard (piano).  After I learned all the chords and how to play them, I had to learn how to play the keyboard with drums.  It's much easier to play to your own beat, but it's harder for people to follow you that way. (smiles)  I'm getting better at keeping the rhythm, so now I am working on filling in with notes between the chords.  I want to be able to play now, but it takes time - time spent with just the keyboard and me.

That's how it is in our relationship with God too.  The only way to draw closer to God and improve our relationship with Him is through time.  Time spent together, just God and me.  It's through time that I learn to discern His voice.  With time I understand His deep love for me.  It takes time for God to change my heart into something that more closely resembles His.

If I spent one hour learning to play the keyboard and then just stopped, I would never be able to play.  I can't just wish for it to happen; I must spend the time to make it happen.  So it is with our relationship with God.  We must be deliberate in pursuing Him.  If you want to know God more, feel Him more, and hear Him more, it takes time.

  1. I so want to relearn the piano. I loved playing!! But it is so much harder than I remember. Sometimes I will sit at the piano praying that as soon as my fingers touch the keys it will all come flooding back to me and I will be even better than before. *Sigh*

It takes work. It takes practice. It takes dedication. Same with our relationship with Chirst. Great reminder!

  2. Wonderful analogy Lisa, and a great point. We have to put time, energy and effort into our relationship with God if we want it to blossom.

    Have a Blessed Day!

  3. Indeed, it takes time and His time on top of it all which is much slower than we are used to in the fast paced world. But, it's worth it to slow down and get into His pace! Great post!

  4. Yes it takes time even when we are impatient it takes time for our relationship to bloom. Love this.

  5. Great reminder. I just read in the book I am currently reading that the biggest way to know God's will for our lives is simply to get to know Him. This reminds me of your post. The way to get to know Him is to spend time with Him (in His Word and in prayer) in order for our relationship to grow. Thanks!
