Following the Crowd

"Everyone else is doing it."  How many times have you heard your children say that?  How many times have you said or thought the same thing?   I must admit that I have had that thought a time or two.  It can be related to everyone else or just someone else.  Everyone else is going to that group; I want to go too.  Someone else is writing worship songs; I want to write them too.  Everyone else is . . .
The Israelites had this "everyone else is doing it" attitude too.

We want a king over us.  Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.  1 Samuel 8:20

The Israelites started looking around at the surrounding nations, and they noticed that all these other nations had a king.  They went to Samuel and said, "Give us a king to lead us." (1 Sam. 8:6)  Their request may have seemed legitimate, but it wasn't God's plan for them.  The nation of Israel was established by God.  They were His people and He was their God.  God, alone, was to be their king.  By wanting to be like the other nations, they were going outside of God's will and plan.

There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.  Proverbs 14:12

Just because everyone else is doing something doesn't mean it's right for me or you.  We have to trust that God has a plan and His way is best.  Instead of saying, "everyone else is doing it," we should should ask, "Does God want me to do this?"

Let God, not the crowd, guide you today.

  1. I have dealt with this many times. Everyone else is doing this or that, I want to! But that may not be what God wants for me (or is some cases it is but I am not making the full effort to do it). I want to do what God wants me to do. I want to follow His will for my life, not someone else's. Thank you for this.

  2. Great point Lisa. "Following the crowd" may be the easy path in many situations, but quite often leads in directions that do little to help anyone and doesn't follow God's wishes for our lives.

    Have a Blessed Day!

  3. Great thoughts. It reminds me of another thing people say "if it feels good do it." It's a much better idea to seek wisdom first. Thanks!
