Our Offerings

I just finished reading in Numbers about all the offerings the Israelites were to bring.  In the New Living Translation, these offerings are listed as:  daily offerings, Sabbath offerings, monthly offerings, offering for Passover, offering for the festival of harvest, the festival of trumpets, the day of atonement and offerings for the festival of shelters.  Each offering had different requirements of what the people were to bring for sacrifices.

Jesus came as the Ultimate Sacrifice, so we no longer have to bring sacrifices for our sins.   But there are still offerings we are to give unto the Lord.

Our bodies
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship.  Romans 12:1

Our gifts (time, money and talents)
I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent.  They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.  Philippians 4:18

Our praises
Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise - the fruit of lips that confess his name.  Hebrews 13:15

Our will
Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them.  Then he said, "Here I am, I have come to do your will."  Hebrews 10:8-9

Our love for God and for others
To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.  Mark 12:33

We don't bring these offerings to earn our salvation.  Our salvation is a free gift from God.  We bring our offerings because of what He has done for us.

What offerings are you bringing to Jesus today?

Memorizing James
If you are taking part in the challenge to memorize the entire book of James this year, you will need to memorize two verses each week. This week's verses are:
James 1:19-20
19.  My dear brothers, take note of this:  Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
20.  for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

  1. Great post. So many unbelievers, think if they just give an offering of money to some random church, they are saved. But that is just not how it works. Salvation is free to us, Jesus paid that price long ago. But we must offer ourselves (money, time, talents, body, will, love, etc..) because He loves us and died for us.

  2. Dave and I have also been reading about all the sacrifices. I was just thinking the other night how Jesus took care of all these sacrifices for us. Yes, our bodies is a sacrifice to the Lord. We can give and give and never give God what He has given us. What a great reminder. Thanks and blessings to you, Lisa.

  4. Great post... love how you compared the offerings of the old testament and what they meant to our offerings today in light of what Jesus did. It's a great list of truths that we follow not for our own benefit, but because we Love Him! Blessings!

  6. Thank you for this very practical reminder that we should desire to be spilled out as an offering to our Lord each moment of our day.

  7. No offering I can bring Him would ever be good enough. But I know that He delights in anything I have to give...so I give Him my all!

  9. This was wonderful Lisa, and very timely. As you noted, our salvation is an amazing, and freely bestowed gift from God. However, it is fitting and right that we should offer all we have to Him for what He's done.

    Have a Blessed Day!

  10. You are right. Obedience is better than sacrifice. And living life for God is our offerings to Him. Thank you for this post. Love it!
