A Lesson from Bolts

My hubby likes to watch The Science Channel.  Recently he was watching an episode of Factory Made that was demonstrating how giant bolts are made.  These bolts are almost 12 inches long and are made from solid steel.  They are used in making bridges, roller coasters, and skyscrapers,  so it's important that they don't fail.

Once the bolt is completely made, it is sent into a furnace to be tempered.  This furnace is heated to 1500 degrees.  While that may seem incredibly hot, the melting bolt of this steel is over 2100 degrees.  The furnace changes the molecular structure and hardens the steel.  After they cool, they bolts are stronger than ever.

By now, you're probably wondering, "why all the info on bolts today?"  I don't really like science and I certainly don't care how bolts are made.  But what caught my attention and made me want to write about bolts is the fire.  The fire made the bolts stronger.

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
1 Peter 5:10
We are like these bolts:
  • We have to go through the fire.  At times it may seem like it is too hot; too much for us.  But God knows our boiling point and He won't let us be tempted beyond what we can bear.     (1 Cor. 10:13)

  • The fire changes our spiritual structure.  James tells us that the testing of our faith develops perseverance, which makes us mature and complete, not lacking anything.  (James 1:3-4)
  • When we come out of the fire, we are stronger than ever before.  The fire is God's refining process.  (Isaiah 48:10)
  •  No one likes to be disciplined or tested.  But the Word tells us that this testing produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. (Hebrews 12:11)
The fire makes us stronger!

Memorizing James
If you are taking part in the challenge to memorize the entire book of James this year, you will need to memorize two verses each week. This week's verses are:
James 1:17-18
17.  Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

18.  He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruit of all he created.

  1. I love the analogy! I needed to be reminded of the 'fire.' I will come out of the fire STRONGER!! Thank you for reminding me that it's all a part of His plan!

  2. Yes as the fire toughens steel, so is the storms of life to man, it either toughens you or breaks you, but with God we overcome all storms of life

  3. If we never went through the fire we would never know the need of the Lord. It certainly makes us stronger than ever before. Thanks for a great post, I feel someone needed to know why we go through the fire. Have a great day and blessings to you.

  4. Love this. Your posts have so encouraged me the past several days!It is so true that we all want the strength without the trial. But of course it doesn't work that way. But God promises with the fire, the trials, and the tough times, end the end we wont be lacking in ANYthing! Praise the Lords!!:) Great message!!!

  5. Great analogy! The fire makes us stronger. God allows us to go through trials and when we honor Him, we come out stronger.

Jeremy likes that how it's made stuff too. ;)

  6. This is great! I like to remind myself that during the hard times God is burning off the dross so that all will be left is pure gold. Now I'll also think about those bolts:)

I came by FTLOB and I look forward to reading more!

  7. Great post Lisa! Sometimes it is so hard for us to understand that there is always a point to trials and challenges in our life. But, so often we can look back and see just how important it was to our growth and our walk with the Lord.

  8. John watches those shows too hehe he tapes them and everything lol. I love this though, the fire makes us stronger. We are to consider it all joy when we face trials for the Lord. I'm trying to get this in my head now ;-)

  9. What a great analogy Lisa! God certainly uses the struggles and challenges in our life to "temper" us in our journey to Him.

    Have a Blessed Day!

    P.S. : I Love those "How it's Made" shows too! :-)

  10. First I've gotta confess that I saw that episode :-) I don't want the fire, but I know that it is through the trials that I grow more like Him!

  11. Lisa, your eyes are open and your heart inclined to His lessons in life. Fascinating how He teaches us spiritual truth through objects we ordinarily wouldn’t pay attention to – but He knows how to capture our heart’s attention, doesn’t He?
    Great illustration here!

    ~ Joy and peace

  12. Yes as the fire toughens steel, so is the storms of life to man, it either toughens you or breaks you, but with God we overcome all storms of life
